Is India Safe for Western Travelers? Here Is What Nobody Else Will Tell You
Every time we tell someone about Roam and Savor, the first question is almost never about the food. It is always some version of: Is India safe?
We understand. India is a big, unfamiliar country. It is often shown in Western media as chaotic and overwhelming. But millions of Western travelers visit India every year. Most come home safe, happy, and already planning their next trip.
Let us answer this question the way only we can. Not as a travel agency reading from a script, but as your hosts who grew up with this culture as part of everyday life.
Who We Are and Why It Matters
My name is Upasna, and I was born and raised in Queens, New York. Arun, my husband and co-host, was born in Jaipur, one of the three cities at the heart of our tour, and moved to Queens, New York with his family when he was five years old. (And no we didn’t have an arranged marriage in case you were wondering). Both of us grew up shaped by two worlds at once: deeply rooted in Indian culture at home and completely comfortable in the Western world we lived in every day.
Growing up in New York, we both traveled to India regularly with our parents and siblings during summer break to visit extended family. India was never an unfamiliar place to us. It was simply part of who we are. As adults, we have continued to travel India extensively. We know which areas are safe to explore, which street food vendors locals have trusted for generations, and how to navigate the country with confidence. We speak the language, and that changes everything about how you experience a place.
When you travel with us, you are not navigating India alone. You are with people who understand India from the inside and understand you completely as Western travelers.
What Happened When We Took Our Own Kids to India
Our children, both born in New York City, grew up spending time between New York and New Jersey, where you can find some of the best Indian food outside of India. Indian food was a constant in their lives, cooked at home by family and enjoyed at restaurants regularly. They were no strangers to the flavors. They had been eating Indian food their whole lives.
But the moment we landed in India, everything changed. They became obsessed with chai, drinking it multiple times a day. Something they had never done at home. They were trying new dishes and asking for more. India has a way of doing that to people, even those who think they already know the food.
Watching our children experience India for the first time gave us something no guidebook could. We saw the country through completely fresh Western eyes. We understood exactly what a first-time visitor feels, what surprises them, what overwhelms them, and what makes them fall completely in love. That experience shapes everything about how we host our guests.
The Honest Answer: Yes, India Is Safe When You Travel Smart
India is not dangerous. India is complex. There is a big difference.
The Golden Triangle covers three cities: Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. This is one of the most visited travel routes in the world, with strong tourism infrastructure and decades of experience welcoming visitors from abroad. Most people who struggle in India are not in danger. They are overwhelmed. They do not know who to trust or where to go. That is where having the right people beside you changes everything.
Your Most Common Questions, Answered Honestly
Is the food safe to eat?
This is the question we hear most, and it is a fair one. Eating the wrong thing in India can ruin a trip. But we have spent our entire lives eating Indian food. We know which dishes are safe, which vendors are trusted, and how to give you a full and authentic food experience without any of the worry. Every meal is personally vetted by us.
What about scams?
Tourist scams exist in India just as they do in every major travel destination. When you travel with Roam and Savor, you are never navigating these situations alone. We handle every transaction and interaction so you never have to figure anything out on your own.
What about local knowledge on the ground?
While Arun and I are with you every step of the journey, we also work with trusted local guides who live and work in each city on our tour. These are people who know their cities inside and out, who understand the day to day changes, the best routes, the hidden gems, and the latest on the ground realities. It is the best of both worlds: hosts who understand you and local experts who know every corner of the cities we visit.
How do we get around?
Getting around in India can feel overwhelming to first-time visitors. Our tour handles all ground transportation. You will never have to figure out how to get from one place to another. We take care of all of it.
What about the heat?
Our tour is in February, and that choice was very deliberate. February is widely considered the best month to visit North India. Days are warm and comfortable, evenings are pleasant, and the extreme heat of spring and summer is nowhere in sight. We have seen other operators run India trips during some of the hotter months; that is not the experience we want for our guests. February in the Golden Triangle is at its most beautiful.
